Naturopathic Medicine: A Natural Path to Healing and Whole-Body Wellness

In recent years, people have turned to natural and alternative treatment approaches. These methods not only alleviate symptoms but also promote long-term balance, often with fewer or no side effects. Among these alternatives, one is naturopathic medicine. In this article, we will explore what it is, its benefits, and the conditions it can treat.

What is the history of naturopathic medicine?

It has a rich and ancient history that dates back over 1000 years. You will find it in various cultures, which include Greeks, Indians (Ayurveda) and Chinese (Traditional Chinese Medicine).

However, the modern form, which we see now, originated in the United States during the 19th century. The term “naturopathy” was first developed in the late 19th century by Dr. John Scheel, and the movement gained momentum when Dr. Benedict Lust, a German immigrant to the United States, popularised it in the early 1900s. The concept encompasses natural remedies, including herbal medicine, proper nutrition, emotional well-being, and physical therapies.

In the early 20th century, the popularity of natural medicine declined, mainly due to the rise of pharmaceutical drugs and conventional medical practices. However, the significant resurgence in natural medicine during the 1970s and 1980s, as people sought alternative medications, offers a hopeful future for the field of alternative medicine.

In the modern era, naturopathic medicine has gained recognition and is subject to regulation. There are now established medical schools that teach about naturopathy, and doctors are licensed and receive training for its practice.

What is naturopathic medicine?

The term Naturopathy is a combination of two Greek words: “pathos”, meaning suffering, and “natura”, meaning birth, which means natural healing.

It is a form of alternative medicine. It utilises natural remedies, including massage, acupuncture, exercise, and nutritional guidance, to promote overall bodily well-being and healing Itself

How does naturopathic medicine work?

It has six founding principles.

  • The Healing Power of Nature: The Body Heals Naturally. Naturopaths work to enhance this process.
  • Identify and Treat the Root Cause: Rather than treating symptoms, naturopaths delve into the root cause to address the underlying cause of illness.
  • First Do No Harm: It uses minimally invasive procedures and relies primarily on natural remedies and non-invasive procedures.
  • Doctors are Teachers: Naturopaths guide and counsel patients, thereby empowering them to make informed decisions about their health. This patient- centric approach empowers you to take control of your well-being.
  • Treat the Whole Person: Naturopaths conduct a comprehensive assessment, considering that all aspects are interlinked, to ensure you are fully understood and cared for.
  • Prevention is Better Than a Cure: Naturopathic medicine emphasises the importance of preventing illness before it occurs.

What to expect during a session?

A typical session lasts about 1-1.5 hours. The Naturopath will examine you, take your medical history, assess your stress levels, and ask questions about your lifestyle. They may order lab work as well.

After completing the assessment, your Naturopath will develop a comprehensive plan that may include dietary recommendations, exercise, stress management, and other therapeutic approaches. It will also include a follow-up session to see the progress and adjust the plan accordingly.
