WHY IV IRON THERAPY

Iron deficiency is common and often overlooked.

Many people, particularly women navigating menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, or hormonal changes experience persistent fatigue and other symptoms linked to low iron. Sometimes these symptoms continue even when results fall within standard reference ranges.

If your bloodwork is borderline but you still feel unwell, a more detailed clinical assessment can help identify whether IV iron is appropriate for you.

Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. When iron levels are low, your body has more difficulty delivering oxygen to cells and tissues, which can contribute to fatigue and other symptoms.

At Aniyah Care, IV iron therapy is delivered directly into the bloodstream under physician supervision and administered by registered nurses. This route may be recommended for patients who do not tolerate oral iron well or for whom oral iron has not adequately raised iron levels.

DO YOU NEED MORE IRON?
Common Signs Of Iron Deficiency

These symptoms can have many causes. A clinical assessment and bloodwork are needed to determine whether iron deficiency is the underlying issue.

Physician-prescribed IV iron formulations

Different IV iron formulations are approved by Health Canada, each with their own dosing schedules, administration protocols, and clinical considerations. Your physician will determine which formulation is most appropriate for you based on your iron levels, medical history, and overall clinical needs.

All IV iron at Aniyah Care is prescribed by a physician and administered in our clinic under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Monoferric (Ferric Derisomaltose)

Venofer (Iron Sucrose)

Ferinject (Ferric Carboxymaltose)

Which IV iron formulation is right for you?

The appropriate formulation depends on factors including your iron levels, medical history, and clinical context. Your physician will review your bloodwork and overall health and recommend the option best suited to your needs.

HOW IT WORKS

How IV iron is administered

IV iron is delivered directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous line. Your physician may recommend this route when oral iron supplements are not sufficient or are not well tolerated.

A clinical assessment and bloodwork including CBC, ferritin, and iron studies are required to determine whether IV iron is appropriate for you and which formulation is suitable.

Administered directly into the bloodstream

Iron enters the bloodstream directly through an IV, without needing to be absorbed through the digestive tract.

Does not require GI absorption

This route is sometimes recommended for patients who experience gastrointestinal side effects with oral iron, or for whom oral iron has not adequately raised iron levels.

45 minutes appointment to several hours

Appointment length varies depending on the type of iron prescribed.

Administered and monitored by registered nurses

You will be observed for approximately 30 minutes after the infusion to monitor for any reactions.

1

Consultation & Bloodwork

Your healthcare provider assesses for iron deficiency through clinical evaluation and bloodwork, including CBC, ferritin, and iron studies.

2

Prescription & Preparation

If IV iron is recommended, your physician will prescribe the formulation most appropriate for your clinical needs.

3

4

Post-Infusion Monitoring

You will be monitored for approximately 30 minutes after the infusion to ensure there are no reactions.

5

Follow-Up

Bloodwork is typically repeated 4–6 weeks after infusion to assess your iron levels. Your physician will determine whether additional infusions are clinically indicated.

Cost Breakdown

Iron infusions involve two separate costs the medication itself and the clinic fee for administering it.

Iron Medication

Iron is billed separately, with pricing based on the specific formulation prescribed. Your care team will review the cost with you in advance.

Your Questions, Answered

Iron infusion, clearly explained

Everything you need to know before your appointment.

Most patients report only a small pinch when the IV is inserted. The infusion itself is generally well tolerated.

Most patients are able to drive and resume their daily activities after the post-infusion observation period. Discuss any concerns with your care team in advance.

Possible side effects may include temporary headache, nausea, or muscle ache. Serious reactions are rare but possible. You will be monitored throughout your appointment, and our team is trained to respond if needed.

This varies by individual and depends on the underlying cause of your iron deficiency. Your physician may recommend follow-up bloodwork and additional infusions as clinically indicated.
