What’s Happening and Why

Urge urinary incontinence (UUI) explained

Urge urinary incontinence (UUI) also described as overactive bladder (OAB) occurs when the detrusor muscle in the bladder wall contracts involuntarily and at inappropriate times, sending an intense urge to urinate even when the bladder is not full. The signal arrives suddenly, is often very strong, and may be difficult or impossible to defer.

Unlike stress incontinence, which is primarily a structural muscle problem, urge incontinence involves the communication pathway between the bladder, the pelvic nerves, and the brain. The bladder fires when it shouldn’t, and the pelvic floor muscles must respond quickly to suppress that contraction and prevent leakage. When the pelvic floor is weak or poorly coordinated, that suppression fails.

Questions About Urge Incontinence & OAB

Something not answered here? Call us directly, our team is always happy to talk things through.

No. Overactive bladder is a medical condition in which the bladder muscle contracts inappropriately, not simply a result of fluid intake. While certain fluids (caffeine, alcohol) can worsen symptoms, they don’t cause OAB. Your care team will address dietary factors as part of a comprehensive plan.

No. Medication is one approach, but it addresses symptoms without treating the underlying muscle and nerve dysfunction, and carries side effects for many patients. Our non-pharmacological treatment, Freedom+ FMS and physiotherapy targets root causes directly.

Some patients notice a reduction in urgency frequency and intensity during their treatment course. Others experience more gradual improvement over several weeks. Your care team will monitor progress and adjust your plan throughout.
